The internship.

Four to twelve weeks, for law students partway through the degree. Seven questions under a 25-minute clock, plus your details and a CV. None of them expects you to have covered a particular subject yet. You will get a written outcome within seven days.

Finished your exams, or already graduated? The litigation trainee programme is the right route for you. It is a longer paper, eleven questions under a 40-minute clock. Every route at the firm asks for law.

No legal knowledge is needed. Nothing here asks you to know any law. We are reading for how you think and how you write.

If the clock runs out you can still submit what you have written. We will see that time ran out and read your answers accordingly. An unfinished honest attempt is worth more to us than a polished one that is not yours.

Seven questions. Answer in your own words. We are reading for how you think, not for the “right” answer. Several have no correct answer at all.

2. One word changed. Find it. *

We sent Version A to the other side. Version B is what came back, signed.

VERSION A:
“The Tenant shall give the Landlord not less than three (3) months' written notice of its intention to renew. The Landlord may, at its discretion, renew the tenancy for a further term of two (2) years at a rent to be agreed.”

VERSION B:
“The Tenant shall give the Landlord not less than three (3) months' written notice of its intention to renew. The Landlord shall renew the tenancy for a further term of two (2) years at a rent to be agreed.”

Find what changed, and explain what it means for the Tenant. You are not expected to know anything about leases.

3. Read this situation carefully. What do you do? *

It is 4:45 PM on a Friday. A lawyer messages you: “Did the signed agreement go out to the client last month? We may need to point to it.”

You check. It was never sent. It has been sitting in a folder for six weeks. The lawyer is in a client meeting until 6 PM. The client's office closed at 5 PM. You do not yet know whether it matters urgently.

There is no single correct answer. What do you do right now? Be specific and walk through each step.

4. A mistake you made that someone else had to help fix. *

What did you do in the first hour after you realised? Do not tell us what you learned. Tell us what you did. It does not have to be from a job.

5. An email arrives that was not meant for you. *

You are copied on an email from the other side's solicitor. Reading the first two lines, it is plainly meant for their own client and not for us. It sets out how far their client is willing to go to settle. Nobody at the firm has seen it yet. It would help our client considerably.
